The Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) has recommended CMA Pravin Kumar for appointment as Director (Finance) of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), marking an important development in the financial leadership of one of India’s largest public sector steel companies. The recommendation was made at the PESB selection meeting held on 21 September 2026, following interviews with 10 candidates for the senior board-level position.
While the PESB recommendation represents a significant step in the appointment process, the formal appointment remains subject to the requisite approvals and clearances. Once approved and formally notified, Pravin Kumar will take on one of the most important finance leadership positions in India’s public sector.
A Career Built Within SAIL
Pravin Kumar brings extensive experience in finance and accounts within SAIL. At the time of his selection by PESB, he was serving as General Manager and second lead for Finance, Costing, Funds Management and Real Estate Management at the SAIL ERP Centre, Corporate Office, Bhilai location. His responsibilities have placed him at the intersection of finance, technology, enterprise resource planning and corporate management.
According to reports on his professional career, Kumar has more than three decades of experience covering areas such as finance and accounts, steel manufacturing, mining, taxation, budgeting, management information systems, business planning, shared services and SAP-based enterprise resource planning.
His association with SAIL has also included important assignments at Bokaro Steel Plant, where he served in senior finance and management roles. His experience there included finance, controlling and funds management, while also contributing to process improvements and financial digitisation.
His career demonstrates an important feature of leadership development in India’s major PSUs: the movement from specialised finance functions to enterprise-wide strategic responsibility.
PESB Selection from 10 Candidates
The selection process for SAIL’s Director (Finance) position was highly competitive. PESB interviewed 10 candidates, including senior executives from SAIL as well as finance professionals from other public sector organisations.
Among the candidates were senior SAIL executives from finance and internal audit functions, along with Sunil Kumar Goel, Executive Director (Finance), Indian Railway Finance Corporation, and Shubhadeep Sen, General Manager (Finance & Accounts) and CFO of Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited. Pravin Kumar emerged as the candidate recommended by the selection board.
The recommendation is significant because the Director (Finance) is a board-level position with responsibility extending well beyond traditional accounting. The role is central to financial strategy, capital management, budgeting, cost control, resource allocation, risk management and corporate governance.
Why the Appointment Matters for SAIL
SAIL operates in an industry where financial management is closely linked with operational performance. Steel manufacturing is highly capital intensive, requiring substantial investments in plants, technology, maintenance, raw materials, energy efficiency and modernisation.
For a company of SAIL’s scale, the Director (Finance) has to balance several competing priorities: maintaining financial discipline while supporting capital expenditure, controlling costs while investing in productivity, managing liquidity while pursuing growth, and ensuring strong governance across a large and geographically distributed organisation.
Pravin Kumar’s experience in finance, costing, funds management, ERP and real estate management gives him exposure to several of these interconnected areas. His background in financial systems and process digitisation could also become particularly relevant as SAIL continues to modernise its management systems and improve data-driven decision-making.
Leadership Transition at SAIL
The recommendation comes at an important point in SAIL’s leadership structure. Dr. Ashok Kumar Panda, who previously served as Director (Finance), assumed charge as SAIL’s Chairman and Managing Director on 9 May 2026. The Ministry of Steel confirmed that Dr. Panda had earlier served as Director (Finance) and had also held additional commercial responsibilities.
With the top leadership transition, the appointment of a regular Director (Finance) is important for strengthening the company’s board-level financial architecture.
A dedicated finance leader will be expected to work closely with the CMD and other functional directors on strategic investments, profitability, cost optimisation, working capital, financial reporting and long-term business planning.
Finance Leadership in a Changing Steel Industry
The Indian steel industry is entering a period of transformation. Companies are dealing with changing global commodity prices, raw-material costs, energy expenses, international trade conditions and increasing expectations around technology and sustainability.
For SAIL, financial leadership will therefore increasingly involve strategic questions rather than only conventional accounting and reporting.
How efficiently can capital be deployed? How can production costs be reduced? How can digital systems improve financial visibility? How can large projects generate sustainable returns? How can the company strengthen its balance sheet while continuing expansion and modernisation?
These questions will be central to the responsibilities of the incoming Director (Finance).
A Milestone for Finance Professionals
The recommendation of CMA Pravin Kumar also carries significance for India’s broader community of finance professionals.
In today’s PSU environment, finance leaders are increasingly expected to combine accounting expertise with business understanding, technology, cost management, risk assessment and strategic thinking. The career progression of professionals such as Kumar illustrates how finance functions have evolved from traditional reporting roles into important strategic leadership centres.
His experience across costing, funds management, ERP and corporate finance reflects the changing expectations from finance professionals in large enterprises.
For young Chartered Accountants, Cost and Management Accountants, finance executives and management professionals aspiring to PSU leadership, such appointments provide an example of how long-term professional experience, functional expertise and exposure to enterprise-wide systems can contribute to board-level opportunities.
Looking Ahead
The formal appointment process will be watched closely by the PSU and steel sectors. Following the PESB recommendation, the required approval and notification process will determine the final appointment.
If approved, Pravin Kumar will assume responsibility for the financial leadership of a strategically important Maharatna public sector enterprise at a time when capital investment, operational efficiency, digital transformation and cost competitiveness are increasingly important.
His experience within SAIL gives him an understanding of the company’s operations and financial ecosystem from the inside. That institutional knowledge, combined with his long experience in finance and enterprise systems, could provide a strong foundation for the next phase of SAIL’s financial management.
The proposed elevation of CMA Pravin Kumar to Director (Finance), SAIL is therefore more than an executive appointment. It represents the continuing rise of professionally qualified finance leaders into strategic positions at India’s largest public sector enterprises—and highlights the increasingly important role of finance in shaping the future competitiveness of Indian industry.
