New Delhi | The Worldonomics Times | 24 October 2026
The leadership transition at Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has entered a decisive phase with the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) recommending Yatindra Mohan for the post of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of the public sector engineering major. The recommendation was made during PESB Meeting No. 86/2026 held on 23 October 2026, following interviews of eight senior executives for the prestigious position.
The recommendation is an important development for one of India’s most strategically significant engineering PSUs. The final appointment will be subject to the requisite government approvals, including consideration by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC). If approved, Yatindra Mohan is expected to succeed the incumbent CMD, K. Sadashiv Murthy, who is scheduled to retire on 28 February 2027 on attaining the age of superannuation.
Yatindra Mohan: A Long Career at BHEL
Yatindra Mohan brings extensive experience within BHEL. He is currently serving as Executive Director (Power Sector – Western Region). He joined BHEL in 1991 after completing his mechanical engineering education from Birla Institute of Technology (BIT), Mesra, and has accumulated more than three decades of experience with the organisation.
His long association with BHEL gives him significant institutional knowledge of the company’s engineering capabilities, power-sector operations, projects and organisational structure.
The experience will be particularly valuable as BHEL navigates a changing energy and industrial environment in India, where conventional power generation is increasingly being complemented by nuclear energy, renewables, advanced manufacturing and new infrastructure opportunities.
Eight Senior Executives Were in the Race
The CMD selection process brought together eight experienced executives from BHEL and other public-sector organisations.
The shortlisted candidates included Vinod Jacob Sam, Ramesh Kumar N, Yatindra Mohan and Nishit Babyloni from BHEL. Other candidates included Shivendra Nath, CMD of Engineering Projects (India) Limited; Daryaw Londhe from REC; Anish Sengupta from SAIL; and Chetan Prakash Jain, Additional Secretary and Financial Adviser in the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research.
The broad profile of the candidates reflects the strategic importance of the BHEL CMD position. The selection involved executives with experience spanning power, transportation, solar, nuclear, infrastructure, engineering and public-sector management.
The recommendation of Yatindra Mohan therefore represents the outcome of a competitive leadership-selection process.
Why the BHEL CMD Appointment Matters
BHEL occupies a critical position in India’s industrial ecosystem. The company has historically played a major role in supplying equipment and engineering solutions for the country’s power sector and has developed capabilities across several strategic areas.
The next CMD will take charge at a time when India’s energy requirements are expanding and the structure of the energy sector is changing rapidly.
The company has opportunities in thermal power, nuclear energy, renewable energy, transportation, industrial systems and advanced engineering. At the same time, BHEL must focus on project execution, manufacturing efficiency, cost competitiveness, technology development and financial performance.
The next phase of leadership will therefore require a combination of technical understanding, operational discipline and strategic vision.
From Order Book to Execution
For a major engineering PSU, winning large orders is only one part of the growth story. The ability to execute projects efficiently, manage supply chains, control costs and deliver equipment within agreed timelines is equally important.
BHEL’s future performance will depend significantly on its ability to convert business opportunities into sustainable revenue and profitability.
The incoming CMD will need to coordinate multiple functions—including engineering, manufacturing, procurement, finance, human resources and project management—to improve execution efficiency.
In an increasingly competitive environment, operational excellence could become one of the most important determinants of BHEL’s long-term performance.
Nuclear Energy Could Become a Major Opportunity
One of the strategically important areas for BHEL is India’s expanding focus on nuclear power.
As India seeks to increase its energy capacity while balancing energy security and long-term sustainability, nuclear power is expected to remain an important component of the country’s energy strategy.
BHEL’s engineering capabilities and experience in large-scale power equipment position it to participate in this emerging opportunity.
For the next CMD, developing BHEL’s capabilities in nuclear and other advanced energy technologies could therefore become an important strategic priority.
Balancing Traditional Strengths with New Opportunities
BHEL’s traditional strength has been closely associated with India’s power-generation infrastructure. However, the company is now required to operate in a much broader industrial environment.
Renewable energy, transportation, advanced manufacturing and technology-driven industrial systems are creating new opportunities.
The challenge for the new leadership will be to protect BHEL’s core strengths while simultaneously developing businesses capable of generating long-term growth.
This will require investment in technology, human capital, research and development and modern manufacturing capabilities.
Importance of Financial Discipline
Financial management will also remain critical to BHEL’s future.
Large engineering projects typically involve long execution cycles, significant working-capital requirements and complex procurement arrangements. Effective cost management and cash-flow discipline can therefore have a major impact on profitability.
For BHEL, financial performance will need to be supported by better project execution, improved productivity, efficient capital allocation and disciplined working-capital management.
This makes coordination between the company’s operational and finance leadership particularly important.
A Significant Moment for PSU Leadership
The recommendation of Yatindra Mohan also highlights the importance of internal leadership development within India’s public-sector enterprises.
With more than 34 years of experience at BHEL, his career represents the possibility of rising through the organisation and taking on one of its highest leadership responsibilities.
For young engineers, finance professionals, management executives and other PSU employees, such leadership transitions demonstrate the value of long-term institutional experience combined with professional expertise and leadership capability.
What Lies Ahead for BHEL
If the recommendation receives the necessary approvals, Yatindra Mohan will inherit a major responsibility at one of India’s most recognised engineering PSUs.
His priorities are likely to include improving project execution, strengthening manufacturing capabilities, expanding strategic businesses, enhancing operational efficiency and positioning BHEL for India’s next phase of energy and infrastructure development.
The company will also need to remain competitive in a rapidly changing global engineering environment where technology, cost, delivery timelines and innovation are increasingly important.
The Worldonomics Times Perspective
The recommendation of Yatindra Mohan as the next CMD of BHEL is more than a routine senior-level PSU appointment. It represents an important leadership transition at a company that has played a central role in India’s industrial and power-sector development.
With the final appointment still subject to the prescribed approval process, the PSU and infrastructure sectors will closely watch the next steps.
The coming years could be particularly important for BHEL as India expands its power infrastructure, strengthens domestic manufacturing and invests in nuclear, renewable and advanced engineering capabilities.
The new leadership will ultimately be judged by BHEL’s ability to convert these opportunities into stronger execution, sustainable growth, technological advancement and improved competitiveness.
For India’s public-sector ecosystem, the BHEL CMD transition is therefore a significant development—and another reminder that strong professional leadership will remain central to the next chapter of India’s PSU growth story.
