ICMAI Advances Insurance Cost Management Through INSCOST Webinar Series

Three-Part Programme Focuses on Insurance Economics, Cost Records, Framework and Specialised Costing

New Delhi | 26 October 2026

The Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI) is strengthening professional understanding of insurance economics and specialised cost management through its webinar series “Recalibrating Insurance Economics – The INSCOST Way.”

The three-part programme is designed to take participants from an introduction to the INSCOST Guidelines to a deeper understanding of their framework, hierarchy, scope and structure, followed by sector-specific discussions on insurance cost records.

The initiative comes at a time when the insurance industry is becoming increasingly complex, with multiple product categories, evolving risk structures, technology-driven operations and growing emphasis on transparency and efficient cost management.

Day-II: Demystifying the INSCOST Framework

The second session of the series is being held on 26 October 2026 under the title “Demystifying INSCOST – II: Framework, Hierarchy, Scope and Structure.”

According to ICMAI’s official event calendar, the webinar is scheduled from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM.

The session builds on the first programme, “Demystifying INSCOST – I: Introduction to the INSCOST Guidelines,” which was conducted on 14 October 2026.

The progression from introduction to framework and structure indicates an effort to develop a systematic understanding of insurance costing rather than treating cost records as an isolated compliance exercise.

Understanding Insurance Economics Through a Cost Lens

Insurance is fundamentally a business of managing risk, but behind every insurance product lies a complex economic structure involving underwriting, claims, distribution, administration, technology, reinsurance and capital.

Understanding these cost components is therefore important for evaluating the efficiency and sustainability of insurance operations.

For Cost and Management Accountants, this creates an important professional opportunity.

Cost information can support management in analysing operational efficiency, understanding cost drivers, assessing profitability and improving resource allocation. A structured approach to insurance costing can also help organisations develop better visibility into the economics of individual business segments.

The INSCOST initiative therefore represents an important area of professional development for CMAs working with or aspiring to work in the insurance and financial-services ecosystem.

Day-III to Cover Five Major Insurance Costing Areas

The third session of the webinar series is scheduled for 27 October 2026 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM.

Its theme is “Insurance Cost Records: Life, General, Health, Reinsurance and Specialised Insurance Costing.”

The session’s coverage across five major areas is particularly significant:

  • Life Insurance Costing
  • General Insurance Costing
  • Health Insurance Costing
  • Reinsurance Costing
  • Specialised Insurance Costing

Each segment has different operational characteristics and cost drivers, making a structured costing approach particularly relevant.

Why Insurance Cost Records Matter

Insurance companies operate across multiple products, geographies, distribution channels and risk categories. Their cost structures can therefore be considerably different from those of conventional manufacturing or service organisations.

Insurance cost records can provide management with greater visibility into the resources consumed in delivering different insurance activities.

For professionals, the subject also demonstrates how the traditional discipline of cost accounting is expanding into increasingly specialised sectors.

The modern CMA is expected to understand not only manufacturing costs but also service-sector economics, financial services, risk-related costing, technology costs and strategic performance measurement.

A New Dimension for the CMA Profession

The insurance sector offers significant opportunities for finance and cost professionals.

As insurers adopt digital platforms, artificial intelligence, automated claims processing and advanced analytics, the nature of cost structures is also changing.

Technology expenditure, customer acquisition costs, claims management, third-party services, distribution expenses, data infrastructure and operational efficiency are becoming important components of management decision-making.

This environment creates a need for professionals who can combine cost expertise with business understanding and technology awareness.

The INSCOST webinar series provides a platform for CMAs and other professionals to deepen their understanding of these emerging requirements.

Building Professional Capability

The three-stage structure of the programme is noteworthy.

SessionDateFocus
Day-I14 October 2026Introduction to the INSCOST Guidelines
Day-II26 October 2026Framework, Hierarchy, Scope and Structure
Day-III27 October 2026Life, General, Health, Reinsurance & Specialised Insurance Costing

ICMAI’s official calendar confirms all three stages of the programme.

The sequence effectively moves from awareness → framework → application, giving participants an opportunity to understand the broader architecture before moving into specific insurance-costing applications.

Strengthening the Role of CMAs in Financial Services

The initiative also reflects the broader evolution of the CMA profession.

Traditionally associated strongly with manufacturing and industrial cost management, Cost and Management Accountants are increasingly contributing to sectors such as banking, insurance, healthcare, infrastructure, technology and other knowledge-intensive industries.

In financial services, where profitability and efficiency can depend on complex combinations of risk, operations, technology and regulatory requirements, cost management can provide an important decision-support function.

The insurance sector is consequently an area where CMAs can potentially contribute across cost analysis, profitability measurement, budgeting, performance management, strategic planning and management reporting.

Looking Ahead

The insurance industry is likely to remain one of the important growth areas of India’s financial-services ecosystem. Increasing insurance penetration, digital distribution, new products and changing customer expectations will continue to reshape the economics of the sector.

Against this backdrop, developing specialised professional knowledge in insurance costing can help create a stronger pool of finance professionals equipped to understand the industry’s operational and economic dimensions.

Through the “Recalibrating Insurance Economics – The INSCOST Way” series, ICMAI is bringing this specialised subject into sharper focus for the professional community.

The Worldonomics Times Take

Insurance is no longer simply about premiums, claims and risk—it is increasingly about understanding the economics behind every insurance activity.

ICMAI’s INSCOST webinar series is significant because it connects the principles of cost management with the increasingly specialised economics of insurance.

The progression from an introduction to INSCOST, through its framework and structure, and finally to Life, General, Health, Reinsurance and Specialised Insurance Costing, provides a structured professional learning journey.

For the CMA community, the message is clear: the future of cost management lies not only in traditional industries but also in specialised sectors where better cost intelligence can drive efficiency, profitability and strategic decision-making.

As India’s insurance ecosystem expands, the ability to understand and manage insurance economics could become an increasingly valuable professional capability for Cost and Management Accountants.
