New Delhi, October 26, 2026: Oil India Limited (OIL), India’s state-owned oil and gas exploration company, has announced a significant natural gas discovery in the Matsyapuri formation of the Krishna-Godavari (KG) Basin off India’s eastern coast. The discovery was made through the Godavari-1 appraisal well in the shallow offshore KG-DSF/GSKW/2018 block, with the well recording a maximum gas flow of 200,000 Standard Cubic Metres per Day (SCMD) during continuous testing.
The development marks an important step in Oil India’s efforts to expand its domestic exploration and production portfolio and strengthen India’s indigenous hydrocarbon resource base. The company disclosed the discovery on October 23, 2026, through a regulatory filing.
Discovery in Previously Unappraised Matsyapuri Formation
The discovery has been made in the Matsyapuri formation, which Oil India described as an otherwise unappraised formation for hydrocarbons. The Godavari-1 well was drilled as an appraisal well in the shallow offshore block KG-DSF/GSKW/2018, which was awarded to Oil India under the Government’s Discovered Small Field (DSF) bidding rounds.
Oil India is the sole operator of the block.
Hydrocarbon presence was identified in one of the selected pay zones at a depth of approximately 2,024 to 2,027 metres. Production testing of the identified zone commenced on October 16, 2026.
During the testing operation, the well initially flowed natural gas at approximately 100,000 SCMD, while a maximum flow rate of 200,000 SCMD was achieved during continuous testing.
Condensate Production Also Recorded
Alongside the natural gas flow, the Godavari-1 well also produced condensate at approximately 170 barrels per day (BOPD). Oil India reported an API gravity of approximately 55.8 at 60°F for the condensate.
The company also reported a wellhead pressure of around 1,815 psi, together with water production during testing.
The combination of natural gas and condensate production provides additional information about the characteristics of the hydrocarbon-bearing zone and will be relevant to the ongoing appraisal and evaluation of the discovery.
Further Testing Planned
Oil India has indicated that preparations are currently under way to test the next higher zone in the Godavari-1 well.
The additional testing will help the company better understand the extent and characteristics of the hydrocarbon-bearing formations. At this stage, Oil India has not announced an estimate of the total recoverable gas resources associated with the discovery.
Therefore, while the 200,000 SCMD test flow is an encouraging exploration result, the ultimate commercial significance of the discovery will depend on further appraisal, resource assessment, development planning and economic evaluation.
KG Basin Remains Strategically Important
The Krishna-Godavari Basin, located along India’s eastern coastline, is one of the country’s most important hydrocarbon-producing and exploration regions. The basin contains both shallow-water and deepwater prospects and has attracted significant exploration activity from major energy companies.
The latest discovery by Oil India adds another development to the region’s growing exploration portfolio.
The discovery is particularly relevant to India’s objective of expanding domestic oil and gas production. India continues to depend substantially on imports to meet its energy requirements, making new domestic discoveries strategically important from an energy-security perspective.
Boost to India’s Domestic Gas Ambitions
Natural gas has an important role in India’s energy system, with applications across fertiliser production, city gas distribution, industrial manufacturing, power generation and other sectors.
The Government has been working to increase the share of natural gas in India’s overall energy mix. The reported discovery therefore comes at a time when increasing domestic gas availability is an important component of the country’s broader energy strategy.
A commercially viable development from the Godavari-1 discovery could, over time, contribute to domestic gas supplies and help diversify India’s sources of natural gas.
However, the discovery should currently be viewed as an exploration and appraisal success rather than confirmed commercial reserves, since Oil India has yet to disclose the estimated recoverable resource or a commercial production timeline.
Part of Oil India’s Broader Exploration Strategy
For Oil India, the discovery demonstrates the company’s continuing efforts to expand exploration beyond its traditional producing areas.
Oil India is a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and operates across the oil and gas value chain. Its activities include exploration, development and production of crude oil and natural gas.
The KG Basin discovery strengthens the company’s presence in India’s offshore exploration landscape and could provide opportunities for further appraisal and development in the block.
The company’s ongoing testing of the next higher zone will be closely watched by the energy industry because additional hydrocarbon indications could improve the overall prospectivity of the block.
Implications for Energy Security
India’s energy demand continues to grow alongside economic expansion and industrialisation. Increasing domestic production of hydrocarbons can play a role in reducing exposure to international energy-price volatility and supply disruptions.
The Oil India discovery is therefore significant beyond the company’s individual exploration portfolio. If subsequent appraisal confirms sufficient commercially recoverable resources, the development could eventually contribute to India’s domestic gas supply.
At the same time, the discovery highlights the continuing importance of exploration technology, offshore drilling capabilities and systematic appraisal of India’s sedimentary basins.
What Comes Next?
The immediate priority for Oil India is further testing and evaluation of the Godavari-1 well.
The company is preparing to test the next higher hydrocarbon-bearing zone. Results from these tests, followed by geological and reservoir evaluation, will provide a clearer picture of the size and commercial potential of the discovery.
The eventual development decision will depend on several factors, including recoverable resource estimates, reservoir characteristics, production economics, infrastructure availability and regulatory approvals.
For now, the 200,000 SCMD peak gas flow represents a notable exploration result for Oil India in the KG Basin.
A Positive Development for India’s Upstream Sector
Oil India’s discovery of natural gas in the previously unappraised Matsyapuri formation adds momentum to India’s ongoing efforts to strengthen domestic hydrocarbon exploration.
With the Godavari-1 well producing natural gas at a peak tested rate of 200,000 SCMD, along with approximately 170 barrels per day of condensate, the discovery provides encouraging results from the shallow offshore KG block.
Further testing and resource evaluation will determine whether the discovery can be translated into a commercially significant producing asset.
For India’s energy sector, the development reinforces the importance of continuing exploration across domestic sedimentary basins as the country seeks to strengthen energy security, expand indigenous production and build a more diversified energy supply base.
