NTPC Appoints Diwakar Nath Misra as Government Nominee Director on Board

New Delhi, October 26, 2026: NTPC Limited, India’s largest power generation company, has appointed Shri Diwakar Nath Misra, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Power, as an Additional Director (Government Nominee Director) on its Board of Directors. The appointment became effective from October 23, 2026, following an order issued by the Ministry of Power on October 19, 2026.

NTPC disclosed the appointment to the stock exchanges under Regulation 30 of the SEBI (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations. The company’s official corporate-announcement records also confirm the appointment and its effective date.

Appointment Till Tenure in Ministry of Power

According to NTPC’s disclosure, Shri Diwakar Nath Misra will serve as Government Nominee Director until the completion of his tenure in the Ministry of Power or until further orders, whichever is earlier. His appointment follows the Ministry of Power’s Order No. 8/6/2018-Th.I dated October 19, 2026.

The appointment strengthens the Ministry of Power’s representation on the Board of NTPC and comes at an important period for India’s power sector, with the country simultaneously pursuing expansion of generation capacity, renewable-energy integration, transmission development and the broader energy-transition agenda.

Experienced IAS Officer

Shri Diwakar Nath Misra is a 2000-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre. He is currently serving as Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Power, Government of India.

He brings more than two decades of administrative and policy experience covering several important areas, including power, finance, commerce, petroleum and natural gas, personnel administration, rural development, urban development, district administration and land-revenue management.

His early career included several field and district-level assignments in Assam, including positions such as Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil), Additional Deputy Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner. These roles provided him with extensive experience in public administration, development management and government coordination.

At the Central Government level, Misra has held several significant responsibilities. His assignments have included positions in the Cabinet Secretariat, Ministry of Defence, Department of Personnel & Training, Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Ministry of Commerce & Industry and Ministry of Finance.

He also served as Additional Secretary in the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, before taking up his current assignment in the Ministry of Power.

Strong Energy-Sector Experience

Misra’s professional background is particularly relevant to his new responsibility at NTPC because of his experience in the energy sector.

During his earlier assignment with the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, he served as Director and subsequently Joint Secretary and was associated with important policy areas concerning India’s petroleum and hydrocarbon sector.

His experience also includes participation in the governance of public-sector enterprises. NTPC’s disclosure notes that he has served on the boards of SJVN Limited and NHPC Limited, giving him prior exposure to the functioning and governance of major public-sector power companies.

Significance for NTPC

The appointment is significant from a corporate-governance and public-sector perspective. As a Government Nominee Director, Misra will participate in Board-level deliberations while representing the Government’s interests in the affairs of NTPC.

His current position in the Ministry of Power, combined with his experience across energy, finance and public-sector administration, could provide the NTPC Board with additional policy and institutional perspective at a time when India’s electricity sector is undergoing significant transformation.

NTPC is expanding beyond its traditional thermal-generation base, with increasing emphasis on renewable energy, energy storage, green hydrogen, transmission-linked opportunities and other clean-energy initiatives. The company has also been progressing with large renewable-energy projects through its subsidiaries and group companies. NTPC’s recent disclosures, for example, include commercial-operation declarations for several renewable-energy projects.

Change in Government Nominee Representation

The appointment follows the cessation of Shri Piyush Singh as Government Nominee Director of NTPC earlier in October 2026. NTPC’s corporate-announcement record shows the cessation dated October 5, followed by the appointment process for Shri Diwakar Nath Misra.

The transition ensures continued representation of the Ministry of Power at the Board level.

Focus on Power Sector Transformation

The timing of the appointment is noteworthy as India continues to focus on increasing power availability, strengthening the electricity grid and accelerating renewable-energy deployment.

NTPC, as one of India’s major state-owned power utilities, has a central role in this transformation. The company’s strategy increasingly encompasses conventional generation alongside renewable and emerging energy businesses.

Against this backdrop, the presence of a senior Ministry of Power official with extensive experience across energy and economic administration is expected to support coordination between policy priorities and the strategic direction of the company.

No Regulatory Disqualification

In its October 23 disclosure, NTPC also confirmed that Shri Diwakar Nath Misra is not debarred from holding the office of director by any order of SEBI or any other authority. The company further disclosed that he does not hold shares in NTPC and is not related to any other director of the company.

A Strategic Board-Level Appointment

The appointment of Shri Diwakar Nath Misra adds significant administrative and energy-sector experience to NTPC’s Board. His background spanning the Ministry of Power, Finance, Petroleum & Natural Gas, Commerce and other areas of public administration makes the appointment particularly relevant as India’s power sector moves toward a more diversified and cleaner energy mix.

For NTPC, the appointment represents continued government representation at the Board level and provides an experienced policy perspective as the company pursues its long-term growth and energy-transition objectives.
