CMA Jatin Kumar Nayak Takes Charge as IREDA CMD; Finance Veteran to Lead India’s Green Energy Lender

New Delhi: Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Limited (IREDA) has entered a new phase of leadership with Shri Jatin Kumar Nayak taking charge as its Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) with effect from October 30, 2026. His appointment brings an experienced finance professional with more than three decades of experience in the power, mining and metals sectors to the helm of India’s specialised renewable-energy financing institution.

Nayak’s appointment was conveyed by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) following the approval process involving the Public Enterprises Selection Board and the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet. He has taken over at an important time for IREDA, as financing requirements for renewable energy, energy storage, green technologies and associated infrastructure continue to expand.

A CMA at the Helm of a Renewable Energy Financing Institution

For the finance and professional community, the appointment has particular significance because Jatin Kumar Nayak is a Fellow Member of the Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of India (ICMAI) and is also a qualified Company Secretary.

He holds a Master’s Degree in Commerce from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, combining professional finance qualifications with extensive experience in corporate finance, treasury and public-sector management. IREDA describes his professional background as spanning financial management, governance, regulatory affairs and the operational realities of large public-sector organisations.

His appointment provides another example of how finance professionals with deep experience in public-sector financial management can move into strategic leadership roles at major government enterprises.

More Than 34 Years of Diverse Experience

Nayak brings over 34 years of professional experience across the power sector and resource-intensive industries, including mining and metals.

Before joining IREDA as CMD, he served as Executive Director (Finance) at REC Limited, a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Power. He also served as the Chief Financial Officer of the erstwhile REC Transmission Projects Company Limited, a subsidiary of REC.

Earlier in his career, Nayak worked with several major public-sector organisations, including NHPC Limited, Hindustan Copper Limited, National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) and Neelachal Ispat Nigam Limited.

His career therefore covers multiple dimensions of India’s infrastructure and natural-resource economy, providing him with exposure to both financing and operating environments.

Expertise Across Corporate Finance and Lending

One of the most important aspects of Nayak’s professional background is the breadth of financial functions he has handled.

According to IREDA’s official profile, his experience includes domestic and international resource mobilisation, strategic treasury management, corporate finance, taxation, legal affairs, project appraisal and monitoring, lending operations, loan recovery and stressed-asset management.

These areas are directly relevant to IREDA’s business model.

Unlike a conventional infrastructure company, IREDA operates primarily as a specialised financial institution supporting renewable-energy development. Its ability to evaluate projects, mobilise funds, manage credit risks and maintain asset quality is therefore central to its role in India’s energy transition.

Nayak’s experience across finance, treasury, lending and stressed assets could become particularly relevant as the renewable-energy financing market grows in scale and complexity.

IREDA’s Growing Role in Green Finance

IREDA is a Navratna Government of India enterprise under the administrative control of MNRE and is engaged in promoting, developing and providing financial assistance for renewable-energy and energy-efficiency projects.

The institution has expanded considerably over recent years. Its outstanding loan book stood at approximately ₹93,069 crore as of March 31, 2026, with financing spread across solar, wind, hydro, state utilities, manufacturing, ethanol, green hydrogen, storage and other emerging clean-energy segments.

This expansion demonstrates the increasing importance of specialised green finance institutions in supporting India’s energy-transition ambitions.

Leadership Comes at a Critical Moment

Nayak assumes charge at a time when IREDA is continuing to expand its financing activities while maintaining focus on asset quality and governance.

The company’s official website lists Q2 FY27 results announced on October 19, 2026, highlighting a 31% growth in loan disbursements and improvement in asset quality.

The leadership transition therefore comes as IREDA seeks to balance two important objectives: scaling up financing for renewable-energy projects while maintaining prudent credit standards.

This balance will be critical as projects become larger, financing structures become more sophisticated and new sectors such as battery storage, green hydrogen and other emerging technologies require substantial capital.

Focus on the Next Generation of Green Infrastructure

India’s renewable-energy expansion is increasingly moving beyond traditional solar and wind projects. Battery energy storage, green hydrogen, electric mobility, manufacturing of renewable-energy equipment and other clean-energy technologies are becoming important components of the broader transition.

IREDA’s portfolio already includes exposure to several of these emerging areas. Its March 2026 portfolio data included financing for green hydrogen and derivatives, storage, electric vehicles and energy-efficiency projects, alongside established renewable-energy sectors.

For the new CMD, this creates an opportunity to combine traditional financial discipline with innovative financing models capable of supporting newer technologies.

Corrected Tenure Details

Nayak assumed charge as CMD on October 30, 2026. IREDA initially disclosed his tenure as continuing until September 30, 2029, or until further orders.

However, the company subsequently clarified that the earlier superannuation date contained a clerical error. The correct date of superannuation is June 30, 2029.

This correction is important for accurate reporting of the appointment.

Significance for CA, CMA and Finance Professionals

The appointment is also noteworthy for India’s professional community.

Nayak’s career demonstrates how professional qualifications in finance and management accounting can serve as a foundation for senior leadership across large public-sector institutions.

His journey—from professional finance roles to Executive Director (Finance) at REC and now CMD of IREDA—highlights the expanding leadership opportunities available to finance professionals who combine technical qualifications with experience in treasury, corporate finance, project appraisal, lending and strategic management.

For CA, CMA, CS and other finance professionals, the appointment provides a strong example of the career progression possible within India’s PSU and infrastructure ecosystem.

Outlook

With Jatin Kumar Nayak taking charge, IREDA enters its next phase with a leadership team headed by a finance professional who brings more than three decades of experience across power, infrastructure, mining and metals.

His immediate challenge will be to support the expansion of renewable-energy financing while preserving asset quality, strengthening risk management and improving the efficiency of project appraisal and lending.

As India accelerates its transition towards a cleaner and more diversified energy system, the role of institutions such as IREDA will become increasingly important.

Nayak’s combination of CMA qualification, corporate-finance expertise, treasury experience and extensive PSU exposure could provide a strong financial-management perspective as IREDA works to finance the next generation of India’s green infrastructure.

The Worldonomics Times will continue to track major PSU appointments, financial developments, renewable-energy investments and career opportunities relevant to CA, CMA, CS and finance professionals.
