POWERGRID Appoints Pankaj Pandey as Director (Operations); Veteran Transmission Executive to Take Charge from December 1

New Delhi: Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has appointed Shri Pankaj Pandey as Director (Operations), marking an important leadership change at one of India’s largest electricity transmission utilities. Pandey, who is currently serving as Executive Director at POWERGRID, will assume charge of the board-level position on or after December 1, 2026.

The appointment was conveyed by the Ministry of Power through Order No. 25-11/7/2025-PG dated October 30, 2026, and subsequently disclosed by POWERGRID to the stock exchanges under Regulation 30 of the SEBI Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements Regulations.

His tenure as Director (Operations) will continue until his superannuation on June 30, 2030, or until further orders, whichever is earlier. POWERGRID has stated that further details regarding the appointment will be communicated after Pandey formally assumes charge.

From Executive Director to Board-Level Leadership

Pankaj Pandey currently serves as Executive Director (Tariff Based Competitive Bidding) at POWERGRID. His elevation comes after a long career in the power transmission sector and follows the scheduled vacancy in the Director (Operations) position from December 1, 2026.

The Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) had earlier recommended Pandey for the Director (Operations) position in August 2026. The post carries significant operational responsibility because POWERGRID’s Director (Operations) is responsible for overseeing the operation of the company’s transmission assets and supporting reliability, efficiency and sustained performance of the transmission network.

Nearly Three Decades of Transmission Experience

Pandey brings around three decades of experience in the power transmission sector. His professional background includes transmission project development, tariff-based competitive bidding, infrastructure procurement, project execution and digitalisation.

According to a recent report by Indian Masterminds, Pandey has played a significant role in POWERGRID’s participation in the Tariff Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) segment. Since FY 2022-23, he has been associated with the securing of 55 transmission projects with a combined value of approximately ₹1.50 lakh crore.

These projects reportedly include India’s first TBCB-based HVDC transmission project, valued at around ₹35,000 crore, as well as POWERGRID’s first Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project.

His experience therefore extends beyond conventional transmission infrastructure into newer areas of India’s evolving power system, including competitive procurement and energy-storage infrastructure.

Strong Procurement and Project Execution Background

Pandey has also handled major infrastructure procurement activities involving transmission lines, substations and HVDC systems. Indian Masterminds reported that his procurement experience covers projects worth more than ₹16,000 crore, including projects supported by international institutions such as the World Bank and Asian Development Bank.

This experience could be particularly relevant as India’s electricity system undergoes a major transformation.

The country’s growing renewable-energy capacity is creating a parallel requirement for high-capacity transmission corridors, grid modernisation, storage solutions and flexible transmission infrastructure. POWERGRID is expected to play a central role in enabling the evacuation and integration of renewable power from resource-rich regions to major consumption centres.

Why the Director (Operations) Role Matters

The Director (Operations) position is strategically important for POWERGRID because the company operates critical transmission infrastructure forming part of India’s national and regional electricity grid.

The official PESB job description states that the Director (Operations) is responsible for laying down the corporation’s operations philosophy, overseeing transmission-asset operations and adopting technological advances to achieve high levels of reliability, efficiency and sustained performance.

The role also includes supporting indigenisation and technology adoption under the government’s broader Atmanirbhar Bharat objectives.

With India’s electricity demand increasing and renewable generation expanding rapidly, maintaining grid stability and transmission reliability has become increasingly important.

Focus on Renewable Energy and Emerging Technologies

POWERGRID’s future operational environment is expected to become more complex as the share of renewable energy increases.

Large solar and wind projects are often located far from traditional consumption centres. This requires high-capacity interstate transmission systems, advanced grid-management capabilities and investments in technologies capable of balancing variable renewable generation.

Pandey’s experience in TBCB projects, HVDC systems and BESS infrastructure provides a background relevant to these emerging requirements. His elevation comes at a time when transmission infrastructure is increasingly being viewed not merely as supporting infrastructure, but as a critical enabler of India’s energy transition.

Leadership Transition at a Strategic Time

The appointment also comes during a period of significant expansion and transformation across India’s power transmission sector.

POWERGRID continues to undertake major transmission investments while participating in competitive bidding for new infrastructure projects. The company is also expanding its involvement in technologies and business areas connected with the future electricity system.

As Director (Operations), Pandey will therefore be taking charge at a time when operational excellence, project execution, digitalisation, grid resilience and renewable-energy integration are becoming increasingly important.

His formal assumption of charge from December 1 will be closely watched by the power-sector and PSU community.

Outlook

Pankaj Pandey’s appointment represents an internal leadership elevation at POWERGRID, bringing an experienced transmission professional to a key board-level operational position.

His background in competitive bidding, transmission projects, procurement, HVDC infrastructure, digital initiatives and emerging energy-storage projects could provide relevant experience as POWERGRID navigates the next phase of India’s electricity-transmission expansion.

For the broader PSU and infrastructure ecosystem, the appointment also highlights the growing importance of specialised leadership capable of managing large-scale transmission investments while adapting to new technologies and the changing structure of India’s power sector.

The Worldonomics Times will continue to track major PSU appointments, infrastructure developments, government policies and career opportunities relevant to finance professionals, CA, CMA, CS and the wider business community.
