POWERGRID Q2 FY27 Profit Rises 8.4% to ₹3,866 Crore; Board Declares ₹3 Interim Dividend

Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has reported a solid financial and operational performance for the second quarter of FY2026-27, with consolidated Profit After Tax (PAT) rising 8.4% year-on-year to ₹3,866 crore.

The company’s Board of Directors, which approved the financial results for the quarter and half year ended September 30, 2026, also declared the first interim dividend of ₹3 per equity share for FY2026-27.

The results underline POWERGRID’s continuing role in India’s electricity transmission infrastructure as the country expands renewable-energy capacity, strengthens interstate transmission networks and prepares its grid for rising electricity demand.

Consolidated Profit Crosses ₹3,800 Crore

POWERGRID reported consolidated profit after tax of ₹3,866.16 crore for Q2 FY27, compared with ₹3,566.08 crore in Q2 FY26.

This represents a year-on-year increase of approximately 8.4%.

Profit also improved sequentially from ₹3,598.42 crore in Q1 FY27, registering approximately 7.4% quarter-on-quarter growth.

Consolidated revenue from operations stood at ₹11,816.22 crore, compared with ₹11,475.95 crore in the corresponding quarter last year, an increase of around 3%.

Total income increased to ₹12,055.11 crore from ₹11,670.24 crore.

Profit before tax increased significantly to ₹4,568.44 crore, compared with ₹3,878.17 crore in Q2 FY26, representing growth of approximately 17.8%.

Standalone Performance Also Remains Strong

On a standalone basis, POWERGRID reported revenue from operations of ₹10,048.43 crore, compared with ₹9,999.60 crore in Q2 FY26.

Standalone profit for the period increased to ₹3,819.08 crore, compared with ₹3,554.80 crore in the year-ago quarter.

Standalone total income stood at ₹11,899.96 crore compared with ₹11,348.27 crore in Q2 FY26.

The company’s underlying transmission business therefore continued to provide a stable earnings base, supported by its large regulated asset portfolio.

₹3 Interim Dividend Announced

One of the key highlights for shareholders is POWERGRID’s declaration of its first interim dividend for FY2026-27.

The Board approved an interim dividend of ₹3 per equity share of ₹10 each, equivalent to 30% of the paid-up equity share capital.

The record date is November 6, 2026, while the dividend is scheduled to be paid on November 30, 2026.

The dividend announcement reinforces POWERGRID’s position as an important dividend-paying PSU with relatively predictable cash flows from its transmission operations.

₹16,864 Crore Capital Expenditure

POWERGRID continues to invest heavily in expanding India’s transmission infrastructure.

The company incurred ₹16,864 crore of capital expenditure up to September 30, 2026.

During the same period, assets worth approximately ₹9,300 crore were capitalised on a consolidated basis, excluding foreign-exchange rate variation and including assets capitalised as finance leases.

These investments are important because India’s electricity system is undergoing a major transformation. The growth of renewable energy, particularly solar and wind, requires new transmission corridors to connect generation centres with major consumption regions.

POWERGRID is therefore positioned at the centre of India’s energy-transition infrastructure.

Transmission Network Reaches Massive Scale

As of September 30, 2026, POWERGRID and its subsidiaries had a transmission network comprising approximately:

  • 1,87,576 circuit kilometres of transmission lines
  • 293 substations
  • 6,49,116 MVA of transformation capacity
  • 99.81% average transmission-system availability

The scale of this network highlights POWERGRID’s strategic importance to India’s electricity system.

High availability is particularly important because interruptions in the interstate transmission network can have significant implications for power supply and grid stability.

H1 FY27 Profit Reaches ₹7,465 Crore

For the first six months of FY27, consolidated revenue from operations stood at approximately ₹23,313 crore, compared with ₹22,672 crore in H1 FY26.

Consolidated profit after tax increased to ₹7,464.58 crore, compared with ₹7,196.66 crore in the corresponding period last year.

On a standalone basis, H1 revenue from operations stood at ₹19,843.83 crore, while standalone profit reached ₹7,230.03 crore.

The first-half numbers indicate that POWERGRID continues to deliver relatively stable earnings despite the capital-intensive nature of the transmission business.

India’s Renewable Energy Expansion Creates New Opportunities

POWERGRID’s future growth is closely connected with India’s expanding renewable-energy ecosystem.

Solar and wind projects are often located far from major consumption centres. This makes transmission infrastructure essential for transporting electricity across states and regions.

India’s growing electricity demand, industrial expansion, electrification, data centres, metro systems, railways and renewable-energy integration are expected to create additional requirements for high-capacity transmission systems.

For POWERGRID, this creates opportunities to participate in large interstate and inter-regional transmission projects.

The company is therefore not simply a conventional transmission utility—it is becoming an important infrastructure platform for India’s energy transition.

Strategic Divestment of CTUIL

Another important development announced with the Q2 results was the Board’s approval for the divestment of POWERGRID’s entire equity stake in Central Transmission Utility of India Limited (CTUIL) to Grid Controller of India Limited (GRID-INDIA).

The company had previously received in-principle approval for the transaction, and the Board has now approved the divestment.

POWERGRID also disclosed that certain investments in joint ventures had been classified as assets held for sale, with DIPAM approval received during the quarter for the relevant exits.

What the Results Mean for Investors

POWERGRID’s Q2 FY27 numbers highlight three important characteristics of the business.

First, earnings remain relatively stable, supported by its large transmission asset base.

Second, capital expenditure remains substantial, indicating continued investment in India’s electricity infrastructure.

Third, the ₹3 interim dividend demonstrates the company’s ability to return cash to shareholders while continuing to invest in expansion.

For investors tracking PSU stocks, POWERGRID represents a different earnings profile from oil, coal or steel companies. Its business is closely linked to transmission infrastructure and regulated returns rather than commodity-price cycles.

Outlook

POWERGRID enters the second half of FY27 with a strong asset base, high transmission-system availability and continuing investment in new infrastructure.

The company’s performance will increasingly be influenced by India’s electricity-demand growth, renewable-energy capacity additions, new transmission corridors and the government’s broader grid-modernisation programme.

The combination of steady profitability, significant capital expenditure, a large transmission network and regular dividend distribution makes POWERGRID one of the key PSUs to watch as India builds the electricity infrastructure required for its next phase of economic growth.
