MSME Registration Crosses 10 Crore Mark in India: Latest Statistics Highlight Rapid Growth of Formal Enterprises

India’s Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector has achieved a significant milestone, with the combined number of enterprises registered under the Udyam Registration Portal (URP) and Udyam Assist Platform (UAP) crossing the 10 crore mark. This development reflects the rapid formalisation of India’s small-business ecosystem and the growing participation of entrepreneurs in the country’s organised economy.

According to the Ministry of MSME’s official dashboard, the combined registration figure stood at approximately 10 crore enterprises as of October 30, 2026. The milestone highlights the increasing importance of small businesses in employment generation, manufacturing, services, trading, exports and regional economic development.

The growth in registrations also reflects the government’s efforts to simplify MSME registration, improve access to institutional finance and bring informal micro-enterprises into the formal economic system.

MSME Registration Crosses 10 Crore

The latest figures from the Ministry of MSME indicate that India’s combined Udyam and Udyam Assist registrations have reached more than 10 crore.

The registration system includes enterprises registered directly through the Udyam portal and informal micro-enterprises formalised through the Udyam Assist Platform.

The official MSME dashboard, dated October 30, 2026, reports the following figures:

CategoryRegistered enterprises
Total Udyam + UAP10,00,51,216
Micro enterprises9,94,63,572
Small enterprises5,45,592
Medium enterprises42,052
Employment generated/reported44,29,31,312

These figures demonstrate the overwhelming contribution of micro-enterprises to India’s MSME ecosystem. Micro businesses account for the vast majority of registrations, highlighting the importance of small entrepreneurs, self-employed individuals, local manufacturers, traders and service providers.

What Is Udyam Registration?

Udyam Registration is the official government registration system introduced by the Ministry of MSME on July 1, 2020.

It replaced the earlier Udyog Aadhaar registration mechanism and provides a simplified, online and paperless process for identifying and formalising eligible micro, small and medium enterprises.

The registration process is free of cost and based on self-declaration, with information verified through government databases.

Businesses receive a permanent Udyam Registration Number and an electronic certificate.

The registration helps eligible enterprises establish their formal identity and access various government-supported benefits, subject to the applicable scheme conditions.

These benefits may include:

  • Priority sector lending.
  • Credit guarantee facilities.
  • Government procurement opportunities.
  • Support for technology upgradation.
  • Participation in MSME development programmes.
  • Access to selected subsidies and incentives.
  • Assistance for domestic and international market development.

Udyam Assist Platform: Bringing Informal Businesses into the Formal Economy

An important reason behind the rapid expansion of MSME registrations is the introduction of the Udyam Assist Platform in January 2023.

The platform was developed to bring informal micro-enterprises into the formal economic system, particularly businesses that may not have GST registration or conventional documentation.

The Ministry of MSME introduced the platform in association with the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI).

Eligible informal micro-enterprises registered through UAP receive recognition for the purpose of accessing Priority Sector Lending benefits, subject to applicable provisions.

This initiative is particularly important for small shopkeepers, home-based businesses, artisans, street-level entrepreneurs, rural manufacturers and other informal economic activities.

By bringing these businesses into the formal system, the government can improve their visibility and facilitate their access to institutional finance.

Micro Enterprises Dominate India’s MSME Ecosystem

The latest registration statistics reveal that micro-enterprises account for almost the entire registered MSME population.

This reflects India’s economic structure, where millions of small businesses operate in manufacturing, retail trade, food processing, handicrafts, repair services, transportation, professional services and other activities.

The Ministry’s dashboard also provides an overview of registrations by business activity.

Business activityRegistrations
Manufacturing1,96,65,730
Services3,87,51,214
Trading4,16,34,213

Trading and service enterprises together account for a substantial share of registrations. However, manufacturing remains an important area for employment, industrial development and export growth.

These figures demonstrate that MSME development is not limited to factories. It also includes millions of businesses operating in local markets and service industries. dashboard.msme.gov.in

Women’s Participation in MSME Registration

Another important feature of India’s MSME growth is the participation of women entrepreneurs.

According to the official dashboard, registrations by gender as of October 30, 2026, were:

  • Male: 6,20,01,049
  • Female: 3,75,75,978
  • Others: 4,61,041

The figures highlight the growing presence of women in India’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Women-led enterprises are increasingly active in food processing, textiles, handicrafts, beauty and wellness, retail, digital services and small-scale manufacturing.

Government initiatives such as PMEGP, PM Vishwakarma and credit guarantee programmes can further support eligible women entrepreneurs in establishing and expanding their businesses. dashboard.msme.gov.in

How MSME Registration Supports Business Growth

Formal registration can provide several advantages to eligible enterprises.

1. Better access to finance: Registered businesses can explore institutional credit, priority sector lending and applicable credit guarantee facilities.

2. Government procurement: Eligible MSMEs can participate in government purchasing opportunities through the Government e-Marketplace (GeM).

3. Delayed payment protection: Registered micro and small enterprises can access the statutory protections available under the MSMED Act, including provisions relating to delayed payments.

4. Technology development: Businesses can explore ZED certification, Lean manufacturing and other technology-upgradation initiatives.

5. Market expansion: Registration can help eligible enterprises participate in government-supported exhibitions, trade fairs and export promotion programmes.

New Government Measures to Strengthen Registered MSMEs

The Union Budget 2026–27 introduced additional measures to improve credit availability and liquidity for registered MSMEs.

Important initiatives include:

  • Making TReDS the settlement platform for purchases from MSMEs by Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs).
  • Introducing CGTMSE-backed credit guarantee support for invoice discounting through TReDS.
  • Integrating GeM with TReDS to improve information-sharing with financiers.
  • Developing a secondary market for TReDS receivables through securitisation.

These measures are intended to improve access to working capital and reduce payment-related difficulties for small businesses. Press Information Bureau
